President Alvi Commits to Administer Oath to Nawaz Sharif if Elected for Fourth Term

PAKISTAN

In an interview with Voice of America Urdu on Thursday, President Dr. Arif Alvi stated that he would fulfill his post’s responsibility by administering the oath to PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif if elected as the prime minister for a fourth term.

“My post demands it. I will administer the oath to whoever the public chooses,” President Alvi asserted during the interview, highlighting the commitment of his role in upholding democratic processes.

Addressing the question of whether he believed the general elections would indeed take place on February 8, President Alvi expressed confidence in the electoral process. He emphasized that conducting polls would provide a clear picture of public opinion, facilitating collaboration among the government, politicians, and the establishment for the country’s benefit.

Responding to concerns raised by the PTI over a lack of a level playing field in the run-up to the polls, President Alvi mentioned that he had received assurances from the interim government. He identified the prime minister’s office and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) as pivotal institutions responsible for ensuring a fair electoral environment.

“I am everyone’s spokesperson. Where there is an issue, I will highlight it,” President Alvi stated, rejecting criticism about becoming a spokesperson for a particular political party. He avoided commenting on whether any political party was the “favourite,” emphasizing the media’s freedom for individuals to form their own opinions.

Regarding the transparency of the general elections, President Alvi acknowledged his non-executive position and emphasized his role as a symbolic figure. He stressed that his influence was limited constitutionally and pledged to work within those confines.

Responding to concerns about transparency while certain politicians remain incarcerated, President Alvi expressed trust in the role of the courts and their commitment to justice. He refrained from speculating on the possibility of PTI Chairman Imran Khan contesting polls while in custody, deferring the decision to the courts.

Discussing the violence that erupted on May 9 following Imran Khan’s arrest, President Alvi condemned the events in every interview, acknowledging that the issue of civilians’ military trials was for the courts to decide.

“I will work to the extent the Constitution allows. There is no executive authority,” President Alvi concluded, emphasizing his commitment to the constitutional framework and the rule of law in Pakistan.
