WHO Planning Three Hospital Evacuations in Gaza

WORLD

As the devastating impact of Israel’s war on Gaza persists, the World Health Organization (WHO) reveals that three hospitals in the Israeli-besieged northern region have sought assistance in evacuating patients. WHO spokesperson Christian Lindmeier expressed deep regret, emphasizing that this evacuation would deprive people of a crucial lifeline.

The hospitals in northern Gaza, including Al Shifa, Indonesian Hospital, and Al Ahli Hospital, are grappling with relentless bombardments, rendering them unable to function normally. Lindmeier highlighted the urgency, stating, “The situation on the ground has grown so dire that the only alternative is facing what they think is certain death as the hospitals are under attack.”

Evacuation planning is underway, but the absence of a safe destination poses a significant challenge. Southern hospitals are already strained and facing shortages, making the coordination with conflicting parties crucial to ensure the safety of the evacuation convoys.

At the same briefing, UNICEF warned of a potential “mass disease outbreak” in the densely populated enclave. UNICEF spokesperson James Elder expressed concern over restricted access to water and sanitation, foreseeing a tragic surge in child mortality if the situation persists. Diarrhea cases in children under five have spiked to ten times the pre-conflict monthly average.

Arif Husain from the World Food Programme added to the grim scenario, revealing that people in Gaza receive only 1-3 liters of water per day, well below international standards for emergencies. Displaced individuals in northern Gaza have been without bottled water for over a week, raising serious concerns about dehydration. The unfolding humanitarian crisis demands immediate and concerted efforts to safeguard lives in the midst of escalating conflict.
