Former Indy 500 Winner Gil de Ferran Dies at 56

Brazilian racing legend Gil de Ferran, a former Indianapolis 500 winner and prominent figure in motorsports, passed away at the age of 56. The Brazilian Automobile Confederation (CBA) confirmed his death, revealing that he suffered a heart attack while participating in a race in Opa-locka, Florida.

Gil de Ferran, born in Paris, gained widespread recognition as a skilled racer, winning the Indianapolis 500 in 2003. Beyond his achievements on the track, he played a significant role in Formula One, serving as a consultant with McLaren after a stint as sporting director.

The tragic incident occurred at a private motor racing club in Florida, where de Ferran fell ill. The CBA reported that he was swiftly transported to a local hospital but, unfortunately, did not survive.

Team Penske, with whom de Ferran had a successful partnership, expressed deep sorrow, stating, “We are terribly saddened to hear about today’s tragic passing of Gil de Ferran.” The team highlighted his accomplishments as an INDYCAR Champion and two-time Indianapolis 500 winner, emphasizing his impact both on and off the track.

McLaren, where de Ferran also contributed significantly, mourned the loss of “a beloved member of our McLaren family.” They acknowledged his formidable presence on and off the track, expressing that he made a lasting impact on everyone associated with racing and working alongside him.

Gil de Ferran’s legacy extends beyond his racing achievements, as he was known for his class, sportsmanship, and positive influence within the international motorsports community. His passing marks a significant loss for the racing world, and he will be deeply missed by fans, colleagues, and friends alike.
