AI Takes Center Stage at CES 2024 as Companies Showcase Gadgets

TECHNOLOGY

Despite OpenAI boss Sam Altman’s absence at CES 2024, the influence of generative artificial intelligence (AI) is evident as companies reveal innovative gadgets. From devices aiding the visually impaired to safety systems for schools, facial-recognition software, and cabin-monitoring systems in autonomous cars, AI integration is a common theme.

Altman’s role in the AI frenzy is likened to Steve Jobs’ impact on Apple, as many companies seek compatibility with OpenAI’s technology. The AI craze, exemplified by Altman’s reinstatement in November amid employee support, has fueled projects, including a secretive AI hardware venture with former Apple designer Jony Ive.

Generative AI funding surged to $23.78 billion in 2023, reflecting its pervasive influence across industries. CES 2024 showcases AI in diverse applications, with companies like Bosch highlighting a gun-detection system, and NEC unveiling AI software analyzing facial patterns for estimating human vitals and mental states.

In the automotive sector, companies like Cerence and Cipia explore AI-powered virtual assistants and systems monitoring driver distraction. Amazon announces a generative AI partnership with BMW, while automakers adopt AI to enhance customer experiences, reduce costs, and streamline production.

PC and smartphone makers, including Intel and AMD, demonstrate AI integration, anticipating new revenue streams. Microsoft introduces PCs with an AI button on the Windows keyboard. However, the challenge lies in convincing consumers of the tangible benefits, as AI capabilities evolve beyond the widely embraced ChatGPT bot.

The CES 2024 theme reflects a universal sentiment: “It’s the year of AI in everything.” Analysts emphasize that products lacking AI integration may find it challenging to make an impact in today’s tech landscape.
