RAWALPINDI: Members of the national selection committee, including Aaqib Javed, Aleem Dar, Asad Shafiq, and Azhar Ali, are closely monitoring the pitch preparation for Pakistan’s third and final Test against England at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. The Press Trust of India (PTI) reported that the selectors want to create a surface that supports spin bowlers, hoping to replicate Pakistan’s recent success.
Large fans, heaters, and black cloths are being used to dry out the pitch and remove as much moisture as possible. The goal is to produce a dry, spinning track that will favor slow bowlers. This strategy follows Pakistan’s win in Multan, where spinners Sajid Khan and Noman Ali claimed all 20 wickets, leading to a 152-run victory.
A source close to the selectors confirmed that Pakistan’s focus remains on making the most of home conditions. “The ground staff has clear instructions to prepare a dry, turning pitch to support spinners, as Pakistan plans to attack England with spin again,” the source said.
Pakistan’s Winning Formula
The upcoming match in Rawalpindi is crucial, with the series tied at 1-1. Ben Stokes’ England dominated the first Test, winning by an innings and 47 runs. However, Pakistan made a strong comeback in the second Test, thanks to their spinners. Now, they aim to keep the momentum.
The selectors are using several methods to dry the pitch quickly, allowing cracks to form. “Large fans and heaters are drying the surface, while black cloths help soak up moisture. The aim is to make cracks appear quickly under the sun,” explained the source.
England’s Rest Day, Pakistan’s Focus
After arriving in Islamabad, the England team took a rest day and hasn’t yet inspected the Rawalpindi pitch. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s squad had a practice session to fine-tune their plans.
Although captain Shan Masood and head coach Jason Gillespie are involved, the selectors are leading the pitch preparations. Aaqib Javed and Aleem Dar, with their vast experience of home conditions, are confident Pakistan will capitalize on a spinning pitch.
High Stakes for Pakistan
Rawalpindi holds special significance for Pakistan, as it was the venue of their last Test series victory at home, when they defeated South Africa in January 2021. With the series against England hanging in the balance, Pakistan will be determined to secure a win on their home ground and clinch the series.
