Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar, the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Accountability, has issued a note to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Selection Committee, urging the inclusion of individuals with a good reputation in the committee.
The former cricketer, Salman Butt’s appointment in the PCB Selection Committee, was taken under scrutiny following the directives of Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar. The appointment, labeled as ‘controversial,’ has been immediately annulled in compliance with the Prime Minister’s instructions.
Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar emphasized that there is no shortage of talent in Pakistan, and the selection committee for cricketers should be free from any disputes. He further directed that selectors with a good reputation should be added to the PCB Selection Committee.
It is noteworthy that yesterday the PCB appointed former cricketers Kamran Akmal, Rao Iftikhar Anjum, and Salman Butt as consultants to Chief Selector Wahab Riaz. However, today, the PCB has announced the removal of Salman Butt as a consultant.
While addressing a press conference in Lahore, Chief Selector Wahab Riaz mentioned that Salman Butt understands cricket, and the decision to make him a consultant was made independently. However, Wahab Riaz has now revoked the decision to include Salman Butt as a consultant, stating that he has reconsidered the decision in the best interest of the team.
Wahab Riaz further commented that there is no pressure on him, and the decision to take back Salman Butt’s name is entirely his own. He clarified that Salman Butt’s name has been withdrawn, and he wants to keep the team’s performance at the forefront.
It is important to note that Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar’s intervention in the selection committee’s affairs aligns with the government’s commitment to ensuring merit-based decisions for the success of Pakistan cricket.
