Brazil Commits to Triple Global Renewable Energy Targets by 2030 in Landmark Agreement

Brazil has officially joined the international agreement to triple global renewable energy capacity by 2030. The commitment, part of the “Global Renewables and Energy Efficiency Targets Pledge,” is backed by influential entities, including the European Union, the United States, and the United Arab Emirates.

Sources reveal that Brazil, South America’s largest country, has become one of approximately 100 nations participating in this global initiative. This move reflects the nation’s dedication to combating climate change and transitioning away from coal, aligning with the broader global push for clean energy.

Brazil’s embassy in Abu Dhabi communicated its decision in a letter to the United Arab Emirates Foreign Ministry, marking a pivotal moment in Brazil’s renewable energy journey. The announcement coincides with the upcoming United Nations COP28 climate negotiations in Dubai, where leaders are expected to adopt the agreement formally.

Brazil, already a significant player in renewable energy, generates over 80% of its electricity from renewable sources, prominently led by hydropower.

While Brazil supports tripling renewables globally, mathematically it is not possible domestically, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said.

“Brazil won’t be able to triple its own renewable energy because it’s already very high, but Brazil is once again reinforcing its support for renewables,” he said.
