EU Antitrust Chief Vestager to Meet Tech CEOs for Digital Regulation Talks

TECHNOLOGY

European Union antitrust chief Margrethe Vestager is set to meet with top tech executives from Apple, Alphabet, Broadcom, and Nvidia during her visit to the United States next week. The discussions, scheduled in San Francisco and Palo Alto, will focus on European digital regulation and competition policy.

Vestager plans to meet Apple CEO Tim Cook, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, Broadcom CEO Hock Tan, and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. The agenda also includes discussions with Alphabet’s Chief Legal Officer Kent Walker and OpenAI’s Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati and Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon.

The timing of Vestager’s meeting with Cook is noteworthy, as Apple previously offered concessions to allow rivals access to its mobile payments systems, seeking to resolve an ongoing investigation by Vestager’s team. The European Commission is expected to gather feedback from rivals and customers this month.

On January 11, the same day Vestager meets with Alphabet, an adviser to Europe’s top court is scheduled to provide a non-binding recommendation regarding Alphabet unit Google’s appeal against a 2.42-billion-euro ($2.6 billion) EU antitrust fine related to market abuse in its shopping service.

Vestager’s interactions with tech leaders follow her recent return to the role, with experts anticipating a more assertive stance on both mergers and competition investigations. The meetings underscore the EU’s continued scrutiny of major tech players and its commitment to shaping digital regulations.
