A Christian man who was injured and rescued from a mob attack in Sargodha late last month has died in a hospital in Rawalpindi, a relative confirmed on Monday. The man succumbed to his injuries after being transferred to Rawalpindi for treatment following the brutal attack.
The incident occurred on May 25, when Sargodha police rescued the man from a lynch mob in the district’s Mujahid Colony. The mob had accused him of desecration and had also attacked the homes of other members of the minority community.
According to reports, a crowd gathered at the victim’s door and attacked him with kicks, fists, and stones when he came out. The mob, growing in number, set a shoe shop belonging to the Christian family on fire and attempted to break into their house, damaging walls and doors in the process.
In response to the violence, authorities registered a terrorism case against 44 named individuals and 300-400 unidentified suspects, leading to over 100 arrests. Concurrently, a blasphemy case was filed against the Christian man.
The victim’s nephew denied the allegations of desecration, emphasizing the baselessness of the mob’s accusations. Initially, the police had shifted the injured man to a military hospital, where his condition was reported as stable.
Despite social media rumors last week claiming that both the man and his son had died, the nephew clarified that his uncle was alive and receiving treatment after being moved to another hospital. Unfortunately, the man’s condition deteriorated, and he passed away in Rawalpindi on Monday.
A relative stated that the victim’s body is being transported back to Sargodha for a funeral, which is expected to take place this afternoon.
