Former PPP Senator Waqar Ahmed Khan Joins PML-N, Signals Political Shift Ahead of 2024 Elections

PAKISTAN

Former federal minister and ex-PPP senator, Waqar Ahmed Khan, made a pivotal move on Wednesday by announcing his decision to join the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), aligning himself with the party’s vision for national stability and experienced leadership.

In a media address alongside PML-N Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s President Amir Muqam, Khan emphasized his commitment to serving the people and prioritizing national interests over personal ambitions. Stressing the need for skilled political alignment and stability, Khan credited Nawaz Sharif’s past leadership for steering Pakistan away from economic challenges and averting defaults during his three terms as prime minister.

Highlighting the crucial link between political and economic stability, Khan underscored the necessity of a stable political landscape for economic growth. He expressed confidence in Ishaq Dar’s leadership within PML-N, believing it would provide the necessary economic expertise to navigate challenging times.

Amir Muqam echoed Khan’s sentiments, attributing the surge in political figures joining PML-N to the leadership of Nawaz Sharif, signaling a growing alignment nationwide. The party’s strategic alliances, including the recent partnership with MQM-P in Sindh and the inclusion of former key leaders from the Baluchistan Awami Party (BAP), further bolster PML-N’s positioning ahead of the forthcoming general elections on February 8, 2024.

Eminent scholar Professor Dr. Hassan Askari weighed in on the political landscape, noting the trend of politicians shifting alliances in response to signals from powerful stakeholders. Emphasizing the absence of concrete ideologies in Pakistani politics, Professor Askari highlighted the overarching ambition among parties to secure power, often at any cost.

The rush of political figures towards PML-N, particularly in Baluchistan, signals a concerted effort to align with the perceived momentum for the forthcoming elections. Analysts anticipate a dynamic political landscape as parties maneuver to secure their positions and alliances in the lead-up to the elections, underscoring the crucial role of strategic partnerships and leadership alignments in Pakistan’s political arena.
