Israeli Activist Miko Peled Challenges Zionist Policies, Condemns Israeli State Actions

WORLD

Renowned Israeli activist and writer, Miko Peled, known for his familial ties to the architects of Israel’s founding, has emerged as a vocal critic of Tel Aviv’s policies towards Palestine. In an exclusive interview with Anadolu, Peled discussed his transformation from a staunch patriot to an advocate for Palestinian rights.

Hailing from a prominent Zionist family, Peled acknowledged his early support for Zionism but emphasized a shift in his perspective. Citing his father’s post-1967 war statement advocating a Palestinian state, Peled expressed disillusionment with subsequent actions contradicting that sentiment, such as the construction of cities in East Jerusalem and the West Bank.

Peled characterized Zionism as inherently supremacist, asserting that it necessitates violence and an apartheid regime. Describing Israel as a “terrorist state,” he highlighted the daily struggles faced by Palestinians, condemning the oppression they endure.

The activist’s journey of questioning Israel’s existence began tragically in 1997, with the death of his niece in a suicide attack. This event prompted a reassessment of the reality he had been taught, leading him to Palestine, where he discovered what he deemed an apartheid state built on lies.

Addressing the recent Gaza attacks, Peled criticized Israel for extracting revenge on innocent civilians. He argued against condemning Palestinian resistance, emphasizing the non-violent nature of their response to prolonged oppression.

Peled urged condemnation of the apartheid regime, the violence faced by Palestinians daily, and specific actions of individuals supporting such policies. He pointed to Israeli doctors approving hospital bombings and students demanding the expulsion of Palestinian citizens as instances deserving censure.
