Pakistan Decides to Recall Ambassador from Iran Over Alleged Unprovoked Airspace Violation

PAKISTAN

Pakistan has decided to recall its ambassador from Iran and suspend high-level visits between the two nations, citing an alleged “unprovoked violation of its airspace” by Tehran. Iran countered, asserting that it targeted an “Iranian terrorist group” and emphasized that no Pakistani nationals were harmed.

The incident, condemned by Pakistan’s Foreign Office (FO) as a violation of sovereignty, resulted in casualties, including the deaths of two children and injuries to three girls. While the FO did not specify the location, Iranian state media reported the attack in the border town of Panjgur in Balochistan, targeting the headquarters of the Jaish al-Adl.

Expressing strong disapproval, FO spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch declared the act “completely unacceptable” and a breach of international law. Pakistan reserved the right to respond, emphasizing that Iran bore responsibility for the consequences.

The context adds complexity, as both Iran and Pakistan are close partners of Beijing and members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation. The incident occurred shortly after a meeting between caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar and Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.

Condemnations echoed across Pakistan, with officials expressing disappointment and emphasizing the need for coordinated action against terrorism. Former Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stressed the importance of dialogue and cooperation, while PPP leader Sherry Rehman called the incident “unacceptable and condemnable,” highlighting the challenge of maintaining Muslim unity amid regional turmoil.

Prominent activist and lawyer Jibran Nasir condemned the airstrike, emphasizing the need for joint efforts against terrorism and urging the prioritization of sovereignty.

The FO lodged a strong protest with Iran, emphasizing the breach’s serious consequences and calling for accountability. The incident follows previous attacks in the region, with Iran urging Pakistan to prevent terrorist groups from establishing bases within its borders.

In a region grappling with security challenges, the episode underscores the delicate balance required for maintaining diplomatic ties and addressing shared concerns, especially within the framework of international norms and cooperation.
