Pakistani actor Adnan Siddiqui has taken to Twitter to call out Indian actor Priyanka Chopra for not mentioning Pakistan in her congratulatory message to filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy, who will be the first person of colour and first woman to direct a Star Wars film.
In her Instagram story, Chopra wrote, “First person of colour and first woman to direct a ‘Star Wars’ film…and she’s South Asian!! What a historic moment @sharmeenobaidchinoy. So so proud of you my friend! May the force be with you!”
Siddiqui, who has worked with Chopra in the past, criticized her for not mentioning Pakistan, saying, “I’m sorry Priyanka Chopra, but you’re a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for Peace and you’re encouraging nuclear war against Pakistan. There is no way you are in this …As a Pakistani, millions of people, like myself, will be disappointed in you. You are a cultural ambassador and you are encouraging nuclear war.”
Chopra has been a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2016 and has been vocal about her support for peace and children’s rights. However, Siddiqui’s comments have led to a heated debate on social media, with some of Chopra’s fans defending her and others agreeing with Siddiqui’s criticism.
Chopra has not yet responded to Siddiqui’s tweet, but the controversy has once again highlighted the strained relations between India and Pakistan, as well as the role of celebrities in promoting peace and understanding between the two countries.
