Prominent Deaths Send Shockwaves Through Mexico’s Muxe Society

CULTURE

Mexico’s muxe community, consisting of individuals identifying as a third gender, faces increased fear and anxiety following the recent deaths of prominent non-binary figures. The muxe community, traditionally respected and celebrated in Indigenous Zapotec society, is grappling with the impact of violence that has shaken its foundation.

Felina Santiago, a member of the muxe community, received the heartbreaking news of the stabbing death of her longtime friend Oscar Cazorla while she was working in her salon. Cazorla’s murder, along with other recent high-profile incidents, has left the muxe community in a state of shock and heightened vigilance.

Jesus Ociel Baena, Mexico’s first openly non-binary magistrate, was discovered dead at home with multiple wounds on November 13. Baena’s death, coupled with previous tragic incidents, has instilled fear and concern among muxes, who now seek increased protection in the face of rising violence.

Traditionally, muxes in Indigenous Zapotec society have enjoyed respect and celebration. However, the recent wave of violence, including the murder of influential figures like Cazorla and Baena, has cast a dark shadow over the community. The fear of further attacks looms large, prompting discussions on enhanced protection measures for muxes.

Felina Santiago, serving as the president of the “Vela de las Auténticas Intrépidas Buscadoras del Peligro” festival, emphasized the need to demonstrate resilience and fearlessness in the wake of these tragic events. The festival, a significant muxe event held annually in Juchitán, took on a poignant meaning this year as the community came together to stand against violence and show solidarity.

The muxe community, known for its vibrant culture and celebration of diversity, now faces the urgent challenge of navigating through a climate of heightened fear and vulnerability. The recent deaths have prompted soul-searching within the community and a collective call for increased safety measures to protect against future acts of violence.
