Protests for Palestine Spread Across US Universities

WORLD

Amid escalating tensions, protests for Palestine have surged across American universities, resulting in clashes between police and students. According to the Associated Press (AP), the movement ignited on April 18 at New York University and swiftly spread to campuses nationwide. Notably, the fervor extended to Europe, sparking confrontations between law enforcement and demonstrators.

Students are advocating for a boycott of companies involved in arms sales to Israel, amplifying their dissent globally. At Sydney University in Australia, protesters established a camp, condemning the Australian Prime Minister’s stance on Israel and Gaza. Similar sentiments echoed in Paris, where Sorbonne University witnessed intense demonstrations, and in Germany, where police dispersed a pro-Gaza camp outside parliament.

The scale of arrests underscores the gravity of the protests, with approximately 900 individuals detained across US universities since April 18. Notably, Saturday saw a significant surge in arrests, totaling 275 from demonstrations at Northeastern University in Boston, Arizona State University in Phoenix, Indiana University in Bloomington, and Washington University in St. Louis. Faculty members from various institutions have also voiced solidarity with the student-led movement, amplifying the call for justice.
