Suspect Accused in Stabbing of South Korean Opposition Leader Lee Jae-Myung

WORLD

A man who is thought to have stabbed South Korea’s opposition leader, Lee Jae-myung, has been officially taken into custody. He faces charges of attempted murder. Kim, a suspect in his 60s was caught right after the attack. This happened in Busan city.

The incident occurred when Lee, a prominent politician, was stabbed in the neck with a camping knife by someone pretending to be asking for an autograph. Luckily, Lee has left intensive care and is getting better after having surgery to fix a big vein in his neck.

Doctors say Lee is getting better, but he still needs to be watched closely for possible infections and issues after the surgery. The reason for the attack is still not known, though Kim gave a note with eight pages to explain why he did it to the police. He also said he plans to kill Lee.

It was found that Kim had been watching Lee since June of the earlier year, and he bought the knife from a website. Kim’s arrest lets the police keep him longer to ask more questions.

The knife attack surprised everyone in South Korea and made people worried about the safety of important politicians. Lee’s party and the ruling party both criticized the attack. South Korea generally has strict regulations on weapons, and public figures usually don’t have extensive security.

The nation has a low crime rate but there were more knife attacks last year. This event adds to past instances of leaders being attacked with weapons.

Lee, who is in charge of the Korean Democratic Party (DP), wants to win more than half of the seats in the coming April elections. He almost won the 2022 presidential elections, but he lost by a small amount to President Yoon Suk Yeol’s right-wing party. The hit on Lee has got people talking about how safe politicians are and the need for more safety steps.
